In my hunt for amazing lenses from times gone by I managed to get a Zoom Nikkor 80-200 f4 AIS on eBay for the amazing price of £40 delivered. Wow.
It doesn’t have a tripod ring but I found it sat comfortably enough on a monopod, when attached to my Nikon D600. Of course it’s manual focus only but that’s pretty easy on the D600 and the focusing ring moves smoothly and relatively quickly.
It focuses just over 1m at the nearest and up to infinity (of course) when mounted on a film slr. I used the D600 as it was convenient to test with. I still have a lot more I want to shoot with this so I’m just adding a few test shots right now for you to check out.
What I will say is… if you can get hold of one. Get it. I stopped using zooms a while back, I even owned the amazing 70-200 VR once upon a time and loved it. But this is just a treat. I think you’d be happy paying a lot more for it than I did. So get it.
